Participatory Photography
I am a Photovoice-trained, CRB-checked facilitator, working with marginalised groups to offer a voice through participatory photography.
In Winter 2010/11 I set up Mother Tongues, a participatory photography project in partnership with the Women’s Foundation of Nepal (WFN).
Six female participants - all residents at the WFN shelter near Kathmandu - attended workshops twice a week where they learned basic digital camera and visual documentation techniques.

Six female participants - all residents at the WFN shelter near Kathmandu - attended workshops twice a week where they learned basic digital camera and visual documentation techniques.
The project aimed to offer the women, who have all experienced extreme domestic violence and/or poverty, a voice with which to tell their stories in a safe and accessible way, increasing their self-confidence and learning new skills in photography and basic conversational English.
It also offered an income-generating opportunity by producing an end-of-project postcard to sell, raising much-needed funds for the organisation.
To read more about the project and view an online gallery of the women's images, please visit the project website.
