Sally Collister - Bristol Photographer

Hello! I'm Sally.

I can’t remember a time I didn’t love taking photos. I was always the one with a camera, documenting nights out, holidays or daily life.  Whilst studying at what is now the Norwich University of Arts  I fell in love with the magic of black & white film photography and darkroom processing.  Over the years my style has evolved, and now my work is  colourful,  full of heart, soul and community.

In 2010 I trained in Participatory Photography Facilitation with PhotoVoice and everything clicked - I'd found a way of combining my passion for photography with my interest in people and social justice.  I was fizzing with ideas!

A few months later I was living in Nepal, and had set up my first project in partnership with Women’s Foundation of Nepal,
working with a group of amazing women who had never even held a camera before in their lives!

I've been lucky enough to work and travel widely.   Favourite global memories include photographing and filming an undercover documentary for Al Jazeera TV in West Papua,  sun-drenched street photography in Cuba, photographing Syrian refugees in Cairo, and documenting daily life in Nepal.

I live in Bristol with my husband and daughter.  Becoming a mother has profoundly shaped my life and work. I'm really interested in perinatal mental health, matrescence, and the connection between nature, creativity and wellbeing - I am continually exploring how photography can support and hold those experiences.
